What are the characters?
What is the ambiance evoked?
What kind of events (elements of plot) can we imagine that the artist is referring to?
Is there pleasure in horror?

Although Gothic culture is rooted in the Middle Ages, many of the art styles that came after it used Gothic and added new layers and concepts to it. This is true of Romanticism in particular, but also of art trends and subcultures of the 20th century. Gothic culture has strongly influenced, for example, the punk subculture, which in turn has had an impact on art with its radical aesthetics. Another Gothic wave brushed through Western visual culture in the 1990s, when the visual language of art was influenced by the rapidly growing advertising industry and media, globalization and terrorism, as well as the daunting "trauma of the era": AIDS. Today, Gothic can be seen as a platform from which various approaches that combine horror, beauty and supernatural phenomena have risen, along with its dissonant and ambivalent aesthetic code referring to carnal desires and complex psychological states.

The characters is 2 womens, a skull and maybe a devil in fouth images. the ambiance of this images is very strange and we have a thrill, the ambiance is very dark, there is no colours, the face of womens is hide and is sad ambiance. For second images the artist we refering to the death of people which married and he died both. For the first images the artist we imagine to beautify the death grace the diamond and the other picture I don't know what referens who are in this images. There is a pleasure in horror beacause we can beautify the horror, we can explain the death beautify, the horror does not scared.
ReplyDeleteIn the first image, we can see a skull with a lot of beautiful diamonds. The skull creates an atmosphere of fear. The background is totally dark, maybe it's a reference to the death, but that makes apparent the beauty of the diamonds. Some people can find beauty in death and others may find it scary. This piece of art is at the same time strange and original. In my mind this represents gothic art because the character is the head of a skeleton and the effects on the people provoke horror, repugnance or maybe disgust despite the diamonds.
ReplyDeleteI choose the artwork « nature » by Sophie Rickett
ReplyDeleteFirstly, the image is dark but there is some white colour and in the middle, there is an owl looking towards us and it is dark like the background of the picture and I can imagine or suppose that it is waiting to is feed
In my opinion, this image is really representing to the gothic art because it can be afraid
